Started in 1892 as a sporting goods retailer, the brand changed hands several times during the 20th century until it was repositioned as a young adult apparel retailer. Controversy in the 2000s fueled profits, but brand tanked during the Great Recession. Rebranded following CEO Mike Jeffries’s departure and recently turned a profit for first time in several years.
