Any Real Survivors?

We see many many examples of companies trying to survive or rise out of bankruptcy by eliminating mass amounts of locations. And while there may be a temporary bump in profitability/sucess for a few years, is it a fair statement to say that those companies will eventually completely fail anyway?

Any examples of one who returned to thrive (permanently) after mass closures/layoffs (greater than 5 or 10%)?

Question: When a company begins mass-closing stores is that inevitably its death knell?
