“Borscht belt” hotels of upstate New York: the rise and fall

From the 1920s to the 1970s, these all-inclusive hotels and bungalow colonies were the premier vacation destination for people from the New York City area who wanted a nice getaway within driving distance from home. A number of well-known entertainers, including Jerry Seinfeld, got their start performing at these resorts. The popular film Dirty Dancing is also an homage to the borscht belt phenomenon. However, the popularity of these hotels waned in subsequent decades, and by the early 2000s virtually all of them had gone out of business.
