Conrail was formed by the US Government in 1976 due to the bankruptcies of multiple Northeastern railroad, with the most infamous being Penn Central. Conrail will managed to overcome the struggles of Northeastern Railroads and helped revive rail in the region before being split up between CSX and Norfolk Southern in 1999. Today it Conrail Shared Assets Operations exist in areas where CSX and Norfolk Southern jointly do operations, it was formed to prevent a railroad from getting an advantage over the other.
