I’ve been researching De Beers lately for school, and I’ve found out some really scummy stuff they have been doing for over a century. So basically De Beers formed from three different companies in the late 1800s, these three companies were the only diamond companies at the time, so they essentially became a monopoly of the diamond market. They would keep hundreds of thousands of diamonds in warehouses, only releasing little batches every month to keep the market value on diamonds extremely high. After decades of only the rich buying diamonds, De Beers started a massive campaign to make diamond engagement rings the norm, and it worked. Now 80-90% of all engagement rings have diamonds on them. And they are still doing the same practices to this day, I think it would be cool to show how rare diamonds actually are ( basically they aren’t at all) De Beers uses a very smart, yet still very crappy strategy to make diamonds expensive.
