When Midwestern-based grocery chain Dominick’s (est. 1918) was forcefully acquired by Safeway in 1998, they fired the then-CEO, Bob Mariano. After swearing to get revenge, he spent the next 15 years building a store from his new chain, “Mariano’s” next to every Dominick’s. In 2013, Dominick’s finally closed their last store.

Mariano’s was later acquired by Kroger (Albertsons).
