The company was started by an ex US sailor in San Francisco in 1948. The company eventually expanded to somewhere around 400 locations.

Today there are only 3 locations in the US but the company is huge in Asia. Every mall that I have been to in Thailand has a Swensen’s, one mall had two Swensen’s!

While the locations in Thailand are solely ice cream shops the location that I visited in Singapore and Taiwan also served food!

I also found a Swensen’s in Miramar (Burma)!

I would be very interested in finding out how all of this came about. How did they all but disappear in the US only to hit it big in Asia?
