The Radium Dial Company

This company set the precedent for neglecting their workers, lying to them about known occupational hazards just to save a few pennies (literally pennies). The workers were exploited, mistreated. The women workers were paid per dial painted and encouraged to “lip, dip and paint” with radium. Labor safety laws such as the occupational disease labor law, labor safety standards and “provable suffering” were literally invented by the litigation this company faced in court in an incident that became known as the “Radium Girls” . In fact this company is the reason that we have a “National Bureau of Standards” and the start of an entire field of science known as Health Physics.
