A grocery store chain in the Northwestern US, now a part of Kroger but still under the same brand name of Fred Meyer’s. It was founded by a German immigrant who went westward looking for gold. Fred Meyer was a very clever man and used marketing tactics such as this, (taken from Wikipedia page) “He [Fred Meyer] deliberately chose through a application of market research: he would pay customers’ overtime parking tickets that they incurred while shopping at his downtown store, just to obtain their home addresses” He also was one of the first to advertise his stores as a ‘one stop shop’, there’s even a song about Fred Meyer’s Stores, with lyrics like “Fred Meyer’s, they’ve got everything from fruit to tires”
I would love to see how important location of stores & marketing is when creating a chain. Also for how this business had such a unique way of starting.
