Most of the “copy,” stories, reports, videos, and photographs distributed in the major news media throughout the US is controlled by a handful of “news agencies” and “wire services.” However, globalization has shaken things up a bit and there are now global and regional competitors, with some historically powerful news agencies now becoming less relevant. The historically influential in the Western world are: Associated Press, Reuters, Agency France Presse, and United Press International. A look at who’s who, who still matters post-globalization and who shrank over time, who dominates domestic news and who dominates global news – would all be interesting.
